[New Education Policy (NEP) 2020]
NEP-2020 says about the value and usefulness of “Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN)” for school students in India.
The sound educators of “The Class of One” accept that “the ability to read, write, and perform basic operations with numbers, is a very necessary foundation for all school going students for their lifelong learning”.
There are a number of governmental, as well as non-governmental surveys in India, show that we are currently in learning difficulties. A large percentage of school students have not learned FLN, that is, they lack the ability to read and understand basic text and they lack the ability to carry out basic addition and subtraction with Indian numerals.
Thus, the sound educators of “The Class of One” accept that “obtaining FLN for all children will thus become an urgent national mission”. To be a part of this national mission, “The Class of One” is continuously teaching students FLN; target students are all those school students who are enrolled with us in Class-1, Class-2, and Class-3.
NEP-2020 has the highest priority goal: “to achieve universal FLN in our primary school students across India by year 2025”. In year 2021, the NIPUN-Bharat program was launched with a vision to ensure universal literacy and numeracy for Class 3 students.
In all respects, the entire team of “The Class of One” is ready to provide its complete full-on dedication to arrive at this national goal by reaching maximum number of students in virtual mode. In fact, we have already started doing work for the same. We have a feeling that, the rest objectives of NEP-2020 will become influential for our school students only if this most basic learning condition, that is, Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic at the foundational level, is first obtained.
To get this goal of NEP 2020, Ministry of Education (MoE) is in process of forming a “National Mission on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy”. Taking that into consideration:
- All State and Union Territories (UT) governments of India will now make an Implementation Plan for getting universal FLN in all primary schools;
- Identifying Stage-wise Targets and Goals to be achieved by year 2025; and
- Tracking and Monitoring progress of the same.
OTHER IMPORTANT FACTS:
- Teacher vacancies will be filled in a time-bound manner; special attention will be given to employing local teachers or those with familiarity with local languages.
- A Student-Teacher Ratio (STR) of under 30:1 will be ensured at the level of each school.
- On the curriculum side, there will be an increased focus on FLN, and generally, on Reading, Writing, Speaking, Counting, Arithmetic, and Mathematical Thinking, in every part of the Preparatory and Middle school curriculum.
- There will a system of continuous Formative/Adaptive Assessment to track ensures each student’s learning.
- High-quality resources on FLN will be made available on the Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (DIKSHA).
- Peer Tutoring: Studies around the world show one-on-one peer tutoring to be extremely effective for learning not just for the learner, but also for the tutor.
- Digital libraries will also be established. A National Book Promotion Policy will be formulated, and extensive initiatives will be undertaken to ensure the availability, accessibility, quality, and readership of books across geographies, languages, levels, and genres.
